The NSTF Awards is the flagship project of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF), in partnership with South32. The NSTF Awards were established in 1998 and they have grown to be the largest and most prestigious public science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation awards in South Africa, honouring and celebrating outstanding contributions to SET and innovation. It is referred to as the ‘Science Oscars’ of South Africa ’ and were the first science awards in the country. The NSTF-South32 Awards showcase the research and development capacity of our nation. The excellent output of the winners supports South Africa’s advancement and the social upliftment of our people.
The NSTF Awards Trophy, prestige and publicity. Some Award categories do provide prize money.
•Contribution to the advancement of science/technological innovation/new knowledge generated

•Outputs –What has been done with this contribution
a. The outputs
b. The practical application/implementation/impact and commercial or economic impact
c. Relevance to South Africa and its people and resultant contribution to science, engineering and technology (SET) policy
d. Publications
e. Promotion of public understanding of SET
•Students, education and development of human capital, sustainability and recognition
a. Supervision of students and promotion of education in this field as a contribution to the public engagement of SET (this has less importance in the Innovation category and the Communication category)
b. Social and economic sustainability
c. National and international impact and recognition
•All the research and work must be in South Africa
