Description of the marketplace platform:

The South African Plastics Pact (SA Plastics Pact) is a collaborative initiative that brings together key stakeholders from the local plastics value chain, including businesses, the South African government, NGOs and other organisations to tackle plastics waste and pollution at its source.

The SA Plastics Pact is a pre-competitive platform to stimulate industry led innovation, dialogue and collaboration to create new business models and generate job opportunities, and unlock barriers to move towards the circular economy for plastic, with improved economic, environmental and societal outcomes overall.

Operation and functionality of the platform:

• It is a Cross sector collaborative platform: The SA Plastics Pact brings together all key players government and citizens behind a common vision to drive solutions supporting a circular plastics economy, with the potential to grow our GDP.
• It assists in overcoming obstacles to achieve shared vision: Shared accountability builds new partnerships within competitive sectors.
• It catalyzes action tailored to the South African context: Actions are tailored to context in South Africa taking into account the drive to create job opportunities and increase capacity in the waste sector.

Benefits of the platform:

• It enables access to expertise and best practice: Clear strategy with support and reporting of progress from baseline.
• It demonstrates leadership and accountability: Sends a clear message to consumers and other organisations that you are serious about addressing plastic pollution and waste.

Registering for the marketplace platform:

Business members (handling plastics at some point in their business operations) sign up and pay a membership fee.
Supporting members are those who can influence the landscape towards achieving SA Plastics Pact targets – these members do not pay fees.
